Medical Assistant

Degree: AAS  |  Graduation Requirements: 62-64 credits

Program Summary:

The Medical Assistant AAS degree at Ïã½¶Ö±²¥ Sullivan prepares individuals for work in doctors’ offices, medical centers, clinics and other health care facilities. Students will learn how to perform routine administrative and clinical tasks which allow these facilities to run efficiently. In addition to core liberal arts & sciences courses, students will study medical office administration and procedures as well as acquire the more specialized medical knowledge and skills needed to assist with many facets of patient pre-treatment. Most office administration courses are offered during the first two semesters of study while specialized medical skills courses, including a medical assistant externship, are required in the third and fourth semesters.

Program Learning Outcomes:
• Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations, and common
medical diagnoses.

• Perform basic clinical procedures such as taking vital signs, venipuncture, electrocardiography, and other laboratory testing.

• Demonstrate proficiency in medical office management and utilize electronic health record (EHR) systems for patient documentation, appointment scheduling, and billing procedures.

• Demonstrate active listening skills and empathy when interacting with patients from diverse backgrounds and collaborating with a healthcare team, understanding the importance of interdisciplinary communication.

• Adhere to safety standards and procedures, including applying the Protective Practices of the Medical Assistant, including principles of aseptic technique, infection control, safety techniques, and essential elements of emergency planning.

State University of New York (Ïã½¶Ö±²¥) policy prohibits Ïã½¶Ö±²¥ Sullivan admission applications from inquiring into an applicant’s prior criminal history. After acceptance, the College shall inquire if the student previously has been convicted of a felony if such individual seeks campus housing or participation in clinical or field experiences, internships (where a criminal history background check is required), or study abroad programs. The information required to be disclosed under Ïã½¶Ö±²¥ policy regarding such felony convictions shall be reviewed by a standing campus committee consistent with the legal standards articulated in New York State Corrections Law, and other applicable law. Students who have previously been convicted of a felony are advised that their prior criminal history may impede their ability to complete the requirements of certain academic programs and/or to meet licensure requirements for certain professions. Students who have concerns about such matters are advised to contact the dean's office of their intended academic program.
